The universe is a HUGE relative time machine

Because light travels at a finite velocity, humans are able to look back into time by observing light from distant objects in space. Even by looking at the moon with the naked eye, you are seeing it as it was ~1.2 seconds ago. High-powered telescopes are able to see further back in time than the eye can almost to the beginning of the universe. If intelligent life in another galaxy is or has somehow observed the Earth, they would see it as it was further back in time relative to their distance to Earth. Is this a form of time travel or time machine? The universe is a HUGE relative time machine
You could say the exact same thing about sound, human perception, etc. It's a cool way to think about the universe, but you aren't really going back in time. You're just observing the effects of an action delayed. The universe is a HUGE relative time machine

I wouldn't call it a form of time travel as nothing is travelling back in time. Neither we nor the light is travelling back in time but rather it is travelling through time at the same speed as the laws of physics allows.
Damn I guess my idea was too far-fetched. It's still cool that we are able to see back in time, though.
You know, I was starting to think the universe was a neuron in some guy's brain :O !
EVERYTHING is an illusion.
It not really time travel or the sort. Mearly a snapshot of time long past.Away of looking at it would be: Ifobservers from a galaxy 65 million miles away saw the Earth from a super powerful telescope, they could see the dinosaurs, even though the dinosaurs are long dead and human have evolved into our current civilization. Furthermore, everthing we look at in the sky we are seeing a few years to billions of year ago, but what we see might not be the same in current time.Very cool knowledge. I love astronomy.:)

Sadly, nothing. I feel real bad about it, but I wanted to get her an iPod Touch, but I didn't have the cash to get her one. I'm probably going to get her one on her birthday in a few months after I start my summer job. What did you get your mom for Mothers Day????
A new tennis racket...
Nothing, would you buy gifts for someone you don't like?
Nothing, primarily because she hates Mother's Day and thinks it's stupid.
Nothing, would you buy gifts for someone you don't like?
Oh you!

Instead of buying something for her, I wrote her a letter. Poured all my thoughts and thanks in it. I think she liked it much more than a physical gift. :)

Iron Maiden. Like em?

Anybody like them? The were all the rage back in the 1980's. One of the few true heavy metal bands of their day, not hair metal. What songs do you like? Sure, they are nothing as heavy as some of the bands today. But, they still rocked.Iron Maiden. Like em?
I don't listen to them. But they have a few good songs.Iron Maiden. Like em?
I like a couple of songs but rarely listen to them.
I listen to quite a few of thier songs but I'm not really an avid fan or anything. I respect them due to them being one of the big innovators in the metal scene though.
Like you said, they were one of the best bands in the 80's who was pure metal, no selling out. My favorite songs by them are Run to the Hills and Number of the Beast. Game on live on and >uh-humm< rock on!
They're alright... not a fan of classic metal however.
Hell yes, Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, To Tame A Land, Hallowed By Thy Name, Wrathchild, Powerslave, Numer Of The Beast, Seventh Son, etc. Most of their songs from the 80s are awesome.
Yes :D They are metal gods
They are alright. I respect the band but I don't like their style of music.
Hell yes! Fantastic band, Powerslave is one of the best cIassicc metal albums of all time.
I really hate them, but my old math teacher loved them.
I really hate them, but my old math teacher loved them.
I can understand not likeing them....but HATE...really?:?
I really hate them, but my old math teacher loved them.
Hate is such a strong word man...
Iron Maiden is the band that got me into metal.
Yes :D They are metal gods
he said it all. :o
Iron Maiden is really good, and even the kids respect them from Rock Band.
Yea they got me into metal.
for rock band, yes.
Seen em twice back in L.A.Rime Of The Ancient Mariner is my favourite song, I like it even more when its live.
Yeah, mainly Brave New World and Dance of Death though.

Trailer Discussion: Gamer

Trailer @ IGNAt first I thought it seemed like a ridiculous concept, plus its been done before just last year in the form of death race, but as the trailer played on I couldn't help but think it was looking better and better. Might see this one, though it still has the potential to be crap. What do you think?Trailer Discussion: Gamer
Done before? Death Race wasnt about a massive video game in which real life players were controlled by people and forced to fight.

Anyway, there is always a 1/100 chance these over the top action films are good....I dont think this is one of them.

Steering wheel knobs Legal / Illegal In NY?

I went in to auto zone and saw that they had a Steering wheel knob, so i bought it.you would think it's legal if they sell it in a store in NY state.Just wondering if any one has any intel on them and what the Topic says ^^^^Thanks.Steering wheel knobs Legal / Illegal In NY?
Don't know, but can you tell me why you came to gamespot to ask that : /?Steering wheel knobs Legal / Illegal In NY?
Cause this is an off-topic forum.
I googled them to see what they where whats the point of them?
Don't know, but can you tell me why you came to gamespot to ask that : /?
Probably to get an answer the same reason why alot of people ask questions on forums.
I really want one of those! :o I'd feel like a redneck for having one though... :P
to turn the steering wheel Lol.Video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgISYNNRTWAinstead of doing hand over hand you place one hand on the Knoband spin the wheel quicker.
I googled them to see what they where whats the point of them?
They use them on tractors and construction equipment so you can turn the wheel fast while still leaving one hand free to operate levers.
According to the comments on that vid it is illegal unless you're disabled, which is possibly more ***** than marijuana being illegal.
I googled them to see what they where whats the point of them?
people with 1 arm use them a lot...
In NY where I work, you may only have a steering wheel spinner affixed to your steering wheel if and only if you have the restriction listed on your license.

DMV will assign this restriction to you, usually based upon some type of medical condition with written proof from your physician.

Any other time, it would be considered illegal and a ticketable offense. Equipment violations in NY are $30 fine + $30 surcharge, and because it's an added or after-market item, the rules about correcting defective equipment don't apply.

You bought a suicide wheel.

I have no idea if they are legal or not. I've only ever seen the handicapped use them.
That sucks. :(
Now the question is why would they sell it if there illegal to the public.but again .... they sell lights for under your car that are illegal when on while drivngNothing on the package saying what states that its illegal in.i also here radar detectors are illegal in my state then i here other wise.and apperently its illeagal to stand on a side walk. had a cop say keep it movingside walks are to be walked on.some of these laws are pretty dumb if you ask me.
Psh. Why would you want one? I almost was required to use one, but thankfully my State doesn't require it. And no, I'm not disabled thank you very much.
Psh. Why would you want one? I almost was required to use one, but thankfully my State doesn't require it. I'm just surprised anyone would voluntary get one of those. Although I guess you have good reason.

I live in NY also and I cant get a straight answer when it comes to radars detectors either. My cousin uses one and says its fine while other people say there illegal.
I can see the reason why they might be illegal. I run Heavy Equiptment, They help in a machine like a Front End Loader since you need a hand to control the bucket. The problems would be your hand slipping off it, that happens a lot to me when I'm working. I'm also not doing 100 km/h around a corner though. So the risk is'nt that big.I don't know if I'd want one in my car, that might be asking for trouble.
yeah im kinda thinking i might take it off but im not sure.

i dont wanna get pulled over if a cop see's a shiny thing affixed on my steering wheel.

and yett i feel like i have better control with turning.

i use it on the right side of my steering wheel.

Official Criteria for an MMO?

Untitled Document

I recently found myself in a huge nerd debate at work as to where the line should be drawn between 'online' games and 'massively multiplayer online' games (MMOs). Talk of 'pseudo-MMOs' was viewed by both parties as a copout and thus avoided.
Due to a shortage of specific and/or credible definitions on the internet, my opponent and I resorted to observations, statistical generalizations and Wikipedia for just about everything in an effort to define 'MMO'. At the end of the day, there was no consensus and we were advised by coworkers that it was an issue best left to good old fashioned internet polling.
I'm not disclosing who held which position, but here they are. Obviously, there are exceptions to everything you're about to read so finding 1 counterexample is not difficult. Basically, how do YOU (or well-explained websites) define an MMO and why?

Position #1:
The label 'MMO' should only be applied when a game possesses most of the common characteristics found in the genre's dominant titles. Examples of such characteristics include immense world ****, a lengthy leveling process, in-game economy, player clases %26 professions, endgame objectives, industrial server hosting by the developer, monthly fee, %26 paid admins. Regular online FPS or RTS games that track player statistics and achievements are simply borrowing elements from RPGs, not MMOs.
''The 'Massive' in MMO comes not only from their incredible population on each server, but also from the near limitless socialization, objectives, and useful rewards they offer players – which contributes years to the games lifespan. A game is only as 'massive' as it's largest and most complex server.''

Position #2:
An MMO is characterized not by how many players can interact at once in the same environment, but rather that the game has a large concurrent online playerbase - no matter how many servers they are spread across, or their individual capacity (32,64).  Examples of such MMOs are Starcraft %26 Counter-Strike. No matter how small the minority, if a few people describe a game as having a 'Massive' player population, its an MMO – regardless of their experience with the genre. Additionally, the achievement systems in these games are equivalent to accumulated weapons %26 gear found in games such as WoW.
''The 'Massive' in MMO comes from the combined sum of every player on every server, especially if they are somewhat linked by stats or achievements. A single server is only as 'Massive' as it's contribution to that overall sum of players. Technically, the only games that are not MMOs are games that people simply do not play online anymore.''Official Criteria for an MMO?
Um...this does not belong in off topic.
